In the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the WHO, the annual risk of infection declined in most countries at about 5 to 10% per year. An exception is Afghanistan with no decline. This illustrates the importance of the slope. In 1960, the level of infection risk in Afghanistan was similar to the other countries. Because of the failure of the risk to decline, the difference between Afghanistan and the other countries became about 7-fold in just 20 years.
