These definitions were first proposed by Johannes Holm at the 1969 meeting of the Tuberculosis Surveillance and Research Unit. These epidmeiological definitions have proved useful for the understanding of tuberculosis epidemiology and have been refined by Ian Sutherland as summarized above, and further elaborated in the next slide.
