In industrialized countries where tuberculosis has become an infrequent event, physicians may fail to make a diagnosis.

In this example from the United States, tuberculosis had actually been suspected and diagnostic procedures been performed. However, the result of the diagnostic procedure was received only after the death of the patient and before chemotherapy was started.  The number of cases missed entirely can, however, not usually be known.
