If 5 TU  tuberculin PPD-S are given to tuberculosis patients, a normal distribution of reaction sizes is observed with a peak at around 16 or 17 mm.

It is hypothesized that healthy individuals with a tuberculous infection develop a similar distribution of tuberculin skin test reaction sizes.
