When the Director of the then WHO's
Global Tuberculosis Programme announced the new tuberculosis control
strategy, later to became known as the DOTS strategy, this table was
published. It summarizes the then estimated level
(intercept) and trend (slope) in the annual risk of tuberculous
infection in four large groups of regions and countries of the
world. It shows also that those areas with the most favorable epidemiologic
situation had also the best health resource availability, while
those with the worst epidemiologic situation also had the least health
resource availability. Meanwhile,
the picture has become even more grim, as the epidemiologic situation in
some sub-Saharan countries is deteriorating, and health resources are
getting even more stretched. To
