The majority of cutaneous adverse
reactions, be there mild (itching), intermediate (rash) or severe (epidermolysis)
tends to occur within the first three weeks of treatment. Initially
mild cutaneous drug events may progress rapidly and lead to death.
For this reason, the use of thioacetazone is contraindicated in persons
known or suspected to have HIV infection. An increasing number of
countries is abandoning the drug entirely from their national tuberculosis
program.
