The majority of cutaneous adverse reactions, be there mild (itching), intermediate (rash) or severe (epidermolysis) tends to occur within the first three weeks of treatment.  Initially mild cutaneous drug events may progress rapidly and lead to death.  For this reason, the use of thioacetazone is contraindicated in persons known or suspected to have HIV infection.  An increasing number of countries is abandoning the drug entirely from their national tuberculosis program.
