In conclusion, countries not disposing of second-line drugs for their tuberculosis patients might be well-advised to choose a first-line regimen that is using the most efficacious drugs in the intensive phase, all given directly observed. The continuation phase should not contain rifampicin and can thus be self-administered. Such an approach will ensure the curability of treatment failures with a re-treatment regimen that is solely based on essential drugs.
